NEWELL
TMCS (SS) Brooks R. Newell loving Father, Grandfather, Son, Brother and Uncle entered into eternal rest at the age of 71 on August 9, 2010 in San Antonio. Brooks honorably served 24 active duty years in the U.S. Navyand 10 years in the IRR retiring as TMCS (SS). Brooks served on many naval ships and submarines but his most memorable and enjoyed years were spent on the USS Peterson DE-152. Brooks also served as Master at Arms in Key West, FL., his favorite duty station and resting place of his beloved USS Peterson. Brooks was a highly revered leader who was known for bringing humor to many a tough situation. He taught as a weapons range instructor and loved to show off his sharp shooter skills, he wrote the training manual used for the MK-44 torpedo until that model of torpedo was decommissioned. Senior Chief Brooks R. Newell will be missed and we salute his life and achievements. Brooks will forever be remembered for his warm loving spirit and genuine friendship. Most of all he was our hero and best friend who will be sorely missed, rest in peace Daddy. Services will be held on Tuesday August 17th at 11:00 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach, San Antonio, Texas 78209. Private burial to follow in Key West, FL.

Dad you were so humble in life, you never spoke of your sacrifices made for your family. When you left us, we had to really dig to find out the history of your Naval career in packed boxes in the back recesses of your closets. The only story you shared was the one you told us about your adventure in Operation Deep Freeze, one that you almost never made it back from. We were so proud to learn of all you achievements earned, all you did and the fact that you never once bragged about your those. While I know you can't read this I know you are with me in spirit. I know you are now in a better place and your children take great solace in that, even though we miss you terribly. For you Dad and all the Veterans, thank you for every thing you have sacrificed, for I know it was enormous and for many it was final.

Old Salts (sea dogs) never die, they just sail into the sunset to the realm of Neptunus Rex. Thank you for your sentiment, it is appreciated.

One of my company commanders in Basic was a TMC...crusty old Sea Dog, named Blanchard. Thirty one years later and I've never forgotten that guy. They do leave one hell of an impression on you.

That first photo of that Sea Dog (my Dad) is him getting a commendation. This story of course had to be extracted from my grandparents when we found the photo and commendation. Apparently he was on shore patrol and they were under high alert and were instructed to not let anyone through. Wouldn't you know on my dads watch the Admiral comes along and wants through. My Dad stopped him and told him he had orders and no one was to get by. The Admiral didn't take that to well and told him to step aside. My father stopped him again and told him, "Sir, I'm to fire three warning shots in the air, the fourth one is for you". Wow, ballsy! But apparently it worked out for him.

Orders are orders, and the senior chief was following his. I believe the admiral probably came away from that experience with at least a grudging respect.

Ahh thanks DaV! He was that and more, he was my best friend we were so very close, and I'm still trying to adjust to living without him. I have my brothers and sister-in-laws who do an awesome job propping me up on my really bad days and I can never thank them enough for what they do. Yeah my dad was awesome!

Losing any family member or close friend is tough. It sucks, but it happens. Just be thankful for the time you had, and the people you still got...

I've had some deaths in my family, just learned how to cope with it from personal experience. Not from wisdom, lol

lol, yeah, you are right about that. I still don't consider myself 'wise'. More like unfortunate for what I know and been through. But thanks for the compliment, though, I do appreciate it...
